Widening Participation is the name of the Skills for Health programme of activity taking place in England to address the UK-wide Extending Participation to promote, champion and facilitate improved access to learning that results in increased benefits for Extending Participation.

The key factors which providers of learning need to consider in relation to widening participation are:

  • lack of time
  • lack of confidence
  • lack of information about opportunities to learn
  • scheduling problems
  • lack of motivation
  • poor previous experience of learning
  • accessibility issues
  • literacy and numeracy problems
